Cholesterol & Lipids Test

Cholesterol & Lipids Test
This test is recommended to individuals with a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease, individuals who are overweight or obese, have a high blood pressure, and/or have a diet with high saturated fats and cholesterol.
Similar to your typical lipids blood panel, the test measures total cholesterol, including HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides levels. Understanding and monitoring cholesterol and lipid levels allows individuals to take steps and life changes to lower cholesterol levels and reduce risks for cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes.
Note: Fasting for 8-12 hours is required prior to administering this test.
What's measured
A crucial component of our cell membranes and is essential for several biological processes in the body. The liver produces cholesterol, and we also obtain it from consuming animal-based foods. Total cholesterol refers to the overall amount of cholesterol in the body, including LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and other smaller lipid molecules.
Low-density Lipoprotein commonly referred to as "bad cholesterol," can accumulate in the walls of arteries, leading to the formation of plaques that can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of heart disease.
High-density Lipoprotein or "good cholesterol," helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and can lower the risk of heart disease.
Another type of fat that are found in your blood. High levels of triglycerides are associated with weight gain, diabetes and heart disease.
